FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
ABOUT FIRST LEGO LEAGUE
FIRST Lego League is an exciting robotics program based entirely on legos. Acting as an introduction into the world of FIRST robotics, students work together to design, build, and code mechanical Lego Robots to complete missions going head to head against other teams at competitions during the year.
Additionally, students engage in the Innovation Project where they seek to solve real world issues with the STEM and Lego skills they build. These students form their own research project through exploring sources and interviewing real field professionals. They then present their findings and solutions to a panel of judges at the compeititon.
CAMP DETAILS
The TVSTEM FIRST Lego League program takes place every Tuesday from 6 - 7:30PM at Ward Melville High School from October to February.
Students will build their robots for this year’s FLL game, research for their innovation project, and head to two competitions for an exhilarating way to show off what they’ve done to other teams.
Our FIRST Lego League teams are mentored by leaders in our high school level robotics team providing direct insights into what it means to work together on a team.
FIRST Lego League is for grades 4-8. Registration includes supply cost and child registration for two competitions. Registration: $1,000
“Must Love Lego Robotics” Social Support Program
This program will meet on Tuesday evenings from 9/29 to 2/9 and two Saturday mornings each month from 9/29 to 2/9.
The program is designed for children in 4th through 8th grade who could benefit from additional support in learning how to work effectively in groups. It is particularly well suited for children with social skills deficits, social anxiety, or Level 1 ASD.
We call it Must Love LEGO Robotics because the double challenge of learning social skills while participating in an activity that a child does not enjoy is not recommended. This program is best suited for children who love building and/or coding, and for children who would love to participate in a LEGO Robotics group and could benefit from direct instruction on how to work in groups/norms of working in groups.
In addition to engaging in LEGO Robotics, participants will receive support in developing conversation skills and learning practical principles and techniques for participating successfully in groups. The goal is for children to gain the skills that will facilitate their success, full participation in any STEM group.
